Bioinformatician (seniority based on experience)
Concert Bio
NOTE: We have already appointed a recruiter to assist with filling this position and will not be engaging with any further agents.
About Concert Bio
We are a biotech startup transforming humanity’s relationship with microbiomes, the world’s most important ecosystem. We’ve started with hydroponics, helping the greenhouse growers who produce many of our vegetables harness their plant microbiome to improve yield, resilience, and sustainability. With our first product already live in the UK and US, and over $6 million in funding, we’re entering an exciting stage of rapid growth and international expansion. You’ll be joining a high performance, passionate team where everyone has high ownership, shaping both the company and its culture as we scale.
Role
Concert Bio has collected the world’s largest database of plant-microbiome data in hydroponic agriculture (18,000+ samples), and we’re constantly expanding it. Collaborating closely with data and plant-microbiome scientists, you’ll take ownership of our bioinformatics pipelines and microbiome analyses. You’ll use your skills and our data gain insights into this barely studied ecosystem. Your work will help us extract actionable insights for growers and develop beneficial microbe products. In the future, you’ll play a key role in guiding the development of our data team.
Responsibilities
- You will be our in-house bioinformatics expert. You will maintain (and develop) bioinformatics pipelines for our routine analyses. You’ll also undertake custom projects in response to grower requests, and to drive your understanding of the hydroponic microbiome.
- Collaborating closely with other team members, you’ll contribute your skills in bioinformatics to help them with their work. You’ll also set and pursue your own R&D objectives to contribute to our wider mission.
- You will interpret and clearly communicate your results by creating accessible and eloquent figures, including simplifying your findings to make them accessible for non-technical audiences.
- You will contribute to a supportive, passionate and high-performance work environment.
Need to have
- Eagerness to push yourself and expand your abilities, both technically and personally.
- Experience creating end-to-end pipelines for converting raw sequencing data into OTU tables. 3rd gen sequencing experience. Ideally experienced with amplicon data, from ONT.
- Proficient in Python and R.
- Experience running analyses in cloud environments (we use AWS), including launching EC2 instances, managing storage with S3, and handling data transfer of large sequencing datasets.
- Experience in the analysis of plant microbiome data, or probiotic/therapeutic microbiome work.
- Ability to analyse large microbiome datasets (n > 1,000), in combination with non-DNA metadata.
- Practical experience querying and extracting data from SQL databases to support bioinformatics analyses.
- Proficiency with version control (Git/GitHub), including maintaining and refactoring code for collaborative projects.
- A love for working in a high-velocity, low-control environment where you have high ownership.
Nice to have
- Experience (ideally in the context of bioinformatics), in machine learning.
- Experience creating or modifying interactive data applications to support analysis and visualisation, ideally using Streamlit.
- Experience with workflow management systems (e.g. Snakemake, Nextflow) for automating and scaling bioinformatics pipelines.
- Familiarity with managing SQL databases, including performing updates, troubleshooting performance issues, and supporting integration with analysis pipelines.
- Experience working at a life science startup where you contributed to their bioinformatics work.
- Experience with plant diseases, both whole-genome as well as amplicon metagenomics.
- This role is suitable for candidates who have experience at the PhD/post-doc level or the equivalent through industry experience. Applications considered on a first-come, first-served basis.
